History of St Oswald's Church
How the Parish Began
The idea for St Oswald's Church came from Father Thomas Austin Hind. He was a Benedictine monk born in Warrington. He wanted to build this church and chose to dedicate it to Saint Oswald of Northumbria.
On July 1, 1924, Archbishop Keating of Liverpool gave permission for this new church community, called a "parish," to be formed. It was the fourth Benedictine parish in Warrington. The other three were St. Albans (started in 1755), St. Mary's (1877), and St. Benedict's (1902).
At first, priests from St Mary's Church, Warrington helped St Oswald's. But on July 24, 1929, St Oswald's became its own independent parish.
Changes Over the Years
The last Benedictine priest at St Oswald's was Father Harold Cyprian Broomfield. In 1962, the leader of Ampleforth Abbey handed over the parish to the Archbishop of Liverpool. This meant that priests from the Archdiocese of Liverpool would now serve the church.
After 2013, following the death of Canon William Redmond, the priest from St Benedict's Church, Warrington also looked after St Oswald's. Then, on May 1, 2018, St Oswald's joined with St Mary's and St Benedict's to form one new, larger parish called Blessed James Bell.

School and Convent at St Oswald's
In 1929, a group of religious women called the Sisters of the Cross and Passion moved to Bruche Hall. This building was very close to St Oswald's Church. They had previously been in another part of Warrington.
A school was opened on September 1, 1931, right next to the church. It could teach up to 200 children. The Sisters and other teachers worked at the school. In 1971, a new building was constructed specifically for the Sisters to live in. This new building is called a "Convent." The old house was then taken down.
