A Look Back in Time
How Old is the Church?
St Oswald's Church is very old! It was first built a long, long time ago, either in the 13th or 14th century. That means it could be around 700 or 800 years old. Imagine all the history it has seen!
Changes Over the Years
The church has been changed and updated many times. A big part of it was rebuilt in 1738. Later, in 1873, the chancel (the part of the church near the altar) was restored. Most of the furniture you see inside the church today is from the 1800s.
The Battle of Stoke Field
Not far from the church, a very important historical event happened. This was the Battle of Stoke Field, which took place in 1487. It was one of the last battles in the Wars of the Roses, a series of wars fought over who should be king of England. Because the battle happened so close, there's a local story that many people who died in the battle might have been buried on the church grounds.
