History of St Oswald's Church
How the Parish Began
The idea for St Oswald's Church came from Father Thomas Austin Hind. He was a Benedictine monk born in Warrington. He wanted to build a new church and chose to name it after St Oswald of Northumbria.
On 1 July 1924, the Archbishop of Liverpool gave permission to create this new church community, called a "parish." It was the fourth Benedictine parish in Warrington. Before St Oswald's, there were St. Albans (started in 1755), St. Mary's (1877), and St. Benedict's (1902).
At first, priests from St Mary's Church, Warrington helped serve the new parish. But on 24 July 1929, St Oswald's became its own independent parish. This meant it had its own priests and could manage its own affairs.
Changes Over the Years
Father Harold Cyprian Broomfield was the last Benedictine priest to lead St Oswald's. On 10 September 1962, the head of Ampleforth Abbey handed over the parish to the Archbishop of Liverpool. From then on, priests from the Archdiocese of Liverpool served the church.
After 2013, the priest from St Benedict's Church, Warrington also began to serve St Oswald's. Then, on 1 May 2018, St Oswald's joined with two other former parishes, St Mary's and St Benedict's. They all became part of one new, larger parish called Blessed James Bell.
School and Convent
In 1929, a group of nuns called the Sisters of the Cross and Passion moved to Bruche Hall. This building was very close to St Oswald's Church.
A school was opened on 1 September 1931. It could hold up to 200 children. The nuns and other teachers worked at the school. In 1971, a new building was constructed for the nuns to live in, called a "Convent." The old Bruche Hall was then taken down.
