A Look Back: Church History
There has been a St Patrick's Church in Grangetown since 1882. This first church was right next to St Patrick's School. Later, in 1921, a Memorial Hall was built.
Plans for a brand new church started in 1928. It was built on land that used to be gardens owned by two church members. The first stone for the new church was placed on St Patrick's Day in 1929. Exactly one year later, on the same day, the church officially opened.

Recent Updates and Changes
Over the past few years, St Patrick's Church has seen some important changes.
A plan was made to build a new health centre for Grangetown. This centre was going to be built where the old parish hall on Bishop Street stood. However, this plan could not go ahead. A group of bats, which are a protected animal in Britain, were found living in the hall's roof. Because of this, new designs were made for a hall to be built next to the church instead. This new plan meant removing some of the church's lawn.
In March 2013, the archdiocese made some changes. St. Cuthbert's Parish, located in the Docks area, became part of St. Patrick's Church. Also, St. Patrick's Church joined the new Cardiff Deanery. This new deanery brought together the old Cardiff East and West deaneries.
The church has also had changes in its leadership. Father John Fahey, who was a priest there for a long time, passed away on Christmas Eve in 2008. Father Bogdan Wera took over in 2008. He helped the church grow, especially with a new Polish community joining. Father Bogdan passed away in September 2017. Currently, Canon Michael Patrick Evans is the priest at St Patrick's Church.
St Patrick's School
St Patrick's R C Primary School is on Lucknow Street in Grangetown. It has strong connections with the church. A special school mass is held once a month at the church. Sometimes, these masses also take place at the school during term time.
The school has about 250 students, aged 4 to 11 years old (from Reception to Year 6). There are around 15 teachers, plus other staff like teaching assistants and administrative staff. After finishing primary school, students from St Patrick's often go on to Mary Immaculate, a Catholic high school in Ely.
