St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church is a special place of worship located in Grangetown, Cardiff, Wales. It is a Catholic church that opened its doors on St Patrick's Day in 1930. It is an important part of the local community and belongs to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cardiff.

A Look Back: The Church's History

St Patrick's Church has been a part of Grangetown for a long time. The first St Patrick's Church was built in 1882, right next to St Patrick's School.

Building the New Church

In 1921, a Memorial Hall was added. Then, in 1928, people started making plans for a brand new church. This new church was built on land that used to be allotments (small gardens) owned by two church members.

The first stone for the new church was laid on St Patrick's Day in 1929. Exactly one year later, on St Patrick's Day 1930, the beautiful new church officially opened!

  • Every year, members of the church go on a special trip called a pilgrimage to Lourdes, a famous religious site.

  • The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul meets regularly to help people in need.

  • The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults helps adults learn about the Catholic faith.
  • The Offertory group helps with collecting donations during services.
  • The Choir sings beautiful music during services.
  • Cathechism classes teach about the Catholic faith.

Recent News and Changes

The church community is always changing and growing.

Plans for a New Health Centre

There was a plan to build a new health centre for Grangetown. This would have meant taking down the old parish hall on Bishop Street. However, this plan faced a challenge because a group of bats (which are protected animals in Britain) live in the hall's roof! Because of this, new plans are being made for a different hall to be built next to the church, which would mean removing some of the lawn.

Church Family Changes

The archdiocese (the larger church area) has made some changes. St. Cuthbert's Parish, located in the Docks, will now become part of St. Patrick's Parish.

Also, St. Patrick's Church is now part of the Cardiff Deanery. This new deanery combines the old Cardiff East and West deaneries.

Changes in Leadership

Father John Fahey, who was a priest at St Patrick's for many years, passed away in 2008. Father Bogdan Wera took over in 2008 and helped the church grow, especially with a new Polish community joining. Father Bogdan passed away in 2017. Now, Canon Michael Patrick Evans leads the church.

St Patrick's School

St Patrick's R C Primary School, located on Lucknow Street, has strong ties with the church. The school and church work closely together.

School Life

A special school mass is held once a month in the church. Sometimes, masses are even held at the school during term time. The school has about 250 students, aged 4 to 11 years old (from Reception to Year 6). There are also around 15 teachers and other staff members, like teaching assistants and office staff. After finishing primary school, students from St Patrick's often go on to Mary Immaculate, a Catholic high school in Ely.
