What is St Patrick's Chapel?
The chapel is very old, built around the 8th or 9th century. It was made from sandstone rocks. The building is shaped like a simple rectangle. It is about 8.4 meters long and 2.7 meters wide.
In 1903, workers did some repairs to make the building stronger. They used stone tiles for this "consolidation work." Today, most of the south wall is still standing. The east wall, which is like the front of the building, is also there. Part of the north wall remains too. The south wall has a special doorway. It has unique stone sides and a curved arch.
The Ancient Tombs
Near the chapel, there are some very old tombs carved into the rock. These tombs are from the 11th century. There is one group of six tombs. There is also a separate group of two tombs. Each group is also listed as Grade I, just like the chapel.
Each tomb has a small hole next to it. These holes were probably made to hold wooden crosses. These interesting tombs were even shown on the cover of a music album. It was the 2000 album The Best of Black Sabbath by the band Black Sabbath.
Discoveries from the Past
Digging Up History
In 1977, archaeologists dug up the area around the chapel. This type of digging is called an excavation. They found that the site was used as early as the late 6th or early 7th century. This shows a link to early Celtic Christianity in the area. At that time, local people spoke old British languages.
The archaeologists found buried skeletons. These skeletons were from people who lived no earlier than the 10th century. Another excavation happened in April 1993. This dig was on the land below the stone coffins. No human bones were found this time. However, over 1,200 old objects were discovered. These objects showed that people lived on this site about 12,000 years ago.
