St Paul's Church is a special church in Camden, north London. It is named after Paul the Apostle. The church is located on Camden Square. It got its name because the land it stands on was once owned by the canons (religious leaders) of St Paul's Cathedral.
History of St Paul's Church
The church was built in 1849. It was designed by two architects, Frederick W. Ordish and John Johnson. The builder was John Kelk. He later became a knight. John Kelk also helped build the famous Albert Memorial in London.
During the Second World War, St Paul's Church was badly damaged. Because of this, a new, smaller church hall building was put in its place. This hall was only meant to be a temporary solution. However, it still serves as the main worship area for the church's community today.
In July 2008, new plans were suggested for the church. These plans included keeping the hall. They also aimed to add new homes and a modern worship space.
St Paul's and Other Churches
From 2003 until 2023, St Paul's Church was part of a group of churches. This group was called the St Pancras team of parishes. Other churches in this group included St Pancras Old Church, St Michael's Church, Camden Town, and St Mary's Church, Somers Town. Since 2023, all four of these churches have become independent parishes again. This means they now manage their own affairs separately.
