History of St Paul's Church

This beautiful church was built a long time ago, between 1854 and 1856. Two architects, George Phillips Manners and John Elkington Gill, who were from Bath, designed it.

Who Helped Build It?

The land for the church was a gift from a person named John Heathcoat. The money needed to build the church came from a special fund called Ambrose Brewin and Mary Beard's charity. So, many people helped make this church a reality!

Later Changes to the Church

Years later, in 1910 and 1911, a part of the church called the chancel was updated. The chancel is the area around the altar where the clergy and choir sit. This work was done by Nevinson and Newton, making the church even better.

The Church Organ

St Paul's Church has a wonderful organ. John Heathcoat, who also gave the land for the church, paid for this organ.

Design of the Organ Case

The wooden case that holds the organ pipes was made in 1857 by H. P. Dicker from Exeter. When it was first installed, the organ was placed at the back of the church, known as the west end.
