History of St Paul's
St Paul's Church was built in 1867. It was officially opened for worship in 1868. The church was designed in an early English style. This style uses simple, strong shapes. It was built using local red sandstone.
In the year 2000, the church building was changed. Part of it became a community space. This new area is now known as The Lingla Centre Cafe.
Church Design and Features
The church is built from local red sandstone. Its roof is made of slate. It has an interesting octagonal belfry, which is a tower where bells are kept.
Inside, the church has a large main area called a nave. It also has a chancel, which is the part of the church near the altar. There is also a south aisle, which is a side section.
Changes in 2000
When the church was changed in 2000, a wall was built inside. This wall was made of breeze blocks. It divided the large space into two parts.
The eastern side of the church is still used for worship. It has the original altar. However, the old wooden pews (church benches) are no longer there. There is a beautiful stained glass window on the north side. The church also has an octagonal font made of marble. A font is a basin used for baptisms. There is also a pipe organ with 27 pipes.
Modern Facilities
The western side of the church now has modern facilities. These include a lift to a new first floor. There is also a professional kitchen and a meeting room. Restrooms (WCs) and a cafe are also available. These changes are similar to those made at St Mary's Church in Ennerdale.
Churchyard
St Paul's Church has a large churchyard around it. This land was bought and made bigger between 1928 and 1929. There are graves of seven people in the churchyard. These people lost their lives during the First World War and the Second World War.
