What is the History of St Peter's Church?
This church has been standing for a very long time! It was first built around the end of the 12th century, which means it's over 800 years old. Imagine all the history it has seen!
How Has the Church Been Changed Over Time?
Like many old buildings, St Peter's Church has been repaired and updated many times.
- In 1857, it was restored by a group called the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.
- Later, in 1873, the main part of the church (the nave) and the side sections (aisles) were also restored.
- More recently, in 1982, the roof of the church was repaired to keep it in good condition.
What About the Churchyard?
Even the churchyard around St Peter's Church has historical items. Two old headstones there are also listed as Grade II listed buildings. This means they are important for their history and design, though not as highly as the church itself.
Does the Church Have an Organ?
Yes, St Peter's Church has a musical organ! This organ was originally made in 1860 by a company called J Halmshaw. It has a long history of its own.
When Was the Organ Installed?
The organ wasn't always in this church. It was moved here in 1995 from another church, St Leonard's Church in Ragnall. Anthony Herrod was the person who installed it in its new home. If you are interested in organs, you can find more details about this one on the National Pipe Organ Register.
