History of St Wilfrid's Church
How Old is the Church?
This church is very old! It was first built way back in the 13th century. That's over 700 years ago! Imagine all the history it has seen.
Changes Over Time
The church has changed a bit over the centuries. The tall tower at the west end of the church was added in the 15th century. It was then updated again in the late 16th century.
In the late 1800s, parts of the church were repaired and improved. The chancel, which is the area around the altar, was restored in 1881. The nave, the main part of the church where people sit, was also restored in 1884. At the same time, a new vestry was built. A vestry is a room where clergy prepare for services.
The Whalley Family Tomb
Inside the church, there is a very interesting tomb made of alabaster. It belongs to a man named Richard Whalley. What makes it special are the carvings on it. They show his three wives and all 24 of his children! It's a unique way to remember a large family from long ago.
Church Community
St Wilfrid's Church is part of a larger group of churches. It shares a parish with St Mary's Church, Car Colston. These two churches are also part of the "Fosse group" of churches. This group includes St Peter's Church, East Bridgford, St Helen's Church, Kneeton, and the Church of St Augustine of Canterbury in Flintham. Sometimes, they even hold joint services with the East Bridgford Methodist Church.
