Stacy Lyall Mader is an Australian astronomer. He works as a Senior Experimental Scientist at CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science. He made history as the first Aboriginal Australian to earn a PhD in astronomy.

Stacy Mader's Early Life and Education

Stacy Mader is a Gidja man. He grew up in Wyndham, a town in the Kimberly region of Western Australia.

He started his journey in science at the University of Western Australia. In 1993, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Physics. He then continued his studies at the University of Wollongong. There, he completed his Masters degree in 1995 and his PhD in 2000.

His PhD research focused on "Giant Herbig-Haro Flows." These are powerful streams of gas and dust that shoot out from newly forming stars. He studied how these streams affect the areas where stars are born.

Exploring the Universe: Stacy Mader's Research

After his PhD, Stacy Mader continued to explore the universe. His research has looked at different types of gas found in galaxies. He also studied protostars, which are very young stars that are still forming.

Another exciting area of his work involves the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. This is the effort to find signs of life beyond Earth. Stacy Mader was also part of important space missions. He worked on the Voyager II mission in 2003 and the Mars mission in 2004.

Stacy Mader's Career in Astronomy

Stacy Mader joined CSIRO's Parkes Observatory in 1999. The Parkes Observatory is famous for its large radio telescope. He helps with astronomical observations, which means he supports scientists using the telescope to study space.

He also helps track spacecraft as they travel through space. His work includes supporting observations with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. This is another powerful telescope that helps us learn more about the universe.

Stacy Mader has also created many computer programs for astrophysics. For example, he wrote a program that can calculate where the Sun, Moon, and other planets will be at any specific time. This helps astronomers plan their observations.

Awards and Recognitions

Stacy Mader has received several important awards for his contributions to science:

  • NASA Group Achievement Award (2003)
  • NASA Group Achievement Award (2013)
  • CSIRO Chairman’s Medal (2015)
  • NASA Group Achievement Award (2019)

These awards recognize his excellent work and teamwork in scientific projects.
