The name Stambourne comes from an old local word. It means 'stony brook'.

A famous stage actress, Dame Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies, lived in Stambourne later in her life. She was known for her acting in the early and mid-1900s. She passed away in 1992 when she was 101 years old.
