Great Yeldham is a village in Essex, England. It is located in the northern part of the county. The village is about 6 miles (10 km) from the border with Suffolk. You can find Great Yeldham along the main A1017 road. This road connects the towns of Braintree and Haverhill.
The River Colne starts near Great Yeldham. Two small streams join it here. One stream comes from near Stambourne. The other flows through Toppesfield. The River Colne then travels about 39 miles (63 km) to the sea. It passes through the city of Colchester on its way.
A very old tree called the "Great Oak" stands in the middle of the village. People say this oak tree was even mentioned in the Domesday Book. The Domesday Book was a huge survey ordered by William the Conqueror in 1086.
In 1967, something surprising happened in Great Yeldham. A person named June Cohen was elected as a local councillor. She was a member of the Communist Party. This was unexpected for many people in the area.

Farming in Great Yeldham
Great Yeldham has a history of farming. The land around the village is mostly used for growing crops. Some farmers also raise animals here.
Whitlock Bros. and Farm Equipment
From the 1950s to the 1970s, a company called Whitlock Bros. was in Great Yeldham. They made equipment for farms. In 1972, another company, Hymac, took over Whitlock Bros. Production then moved to a different place in South Wales. The factory in Great Yeldham closed down. This meant many people lost their jobs.
Lark Hill Farm
For many years, Great Yeldham was also known for Lark Hill Farm. This farm grew apples and strawberries. It operated from the early 1950s until the mid-1980s.
Travel and Transport
Great Yeldham once had its own railway station. It was called Yeldham railway station. This station was part of the Colne Valley and Halstead Railway line. Trains ran between Chappel and Wakes Colne and Haverhill.
The railway line crossed Station Road at a level crossing. A level crossing is where a road crosses railway tracks. Passenger trains stopped using the station in 1962. The road where the crossing was is now called Toppesfield Road.
