Stanley John Trafford (born December 21, 1945 – died November 19, 2020) was a talented English sportsman. He was known for playing both football and cricket. Stan played football for teams like Port Vale and Macclesfield Town. He also played cricket for Staffordshire.
Stan's Early Life
Stan Trafford was born in Leek, Staffordshire, England, on December 21, 1945. From a young age, he loved playing both football and cricket. He was so good at cricket that he once took four wickets in four balls for his school team! Stan also played for the youth team at Port Vale.
Football Career
Stan Trafford became a professional football player for Port Vale in October 1964. He played as a forward. During the 1964–65 season, he played in 12 games and scored one goal.
His first game for Port Vale was on October 17, 1964, at their home ground, Vale Park. He scored his only goal in the English Football League on March 15, 1965, helping Port Vale win 2–1 against Oldham Athletic.
In April 1965, Stan left Port Vale. He then joined Macclesfield Town in January 1966. He played 10 games for them before leaving in the summer of that year.
Stan remained connected to Port Vale. He was part of their ex-players association and even attended a game in the 2019–20 season. He was also good friends with his former teammate, Terry Lowe.
Cricket Career
Stan Trafford was also a skilled cricketer. He started playing for Staffordshire in 1963. He played two matches that year. He returned to play for Staffordshire in 1976, playing two more matches.
In 1976, Stan played his only List A match. This was against Essex in the Gillette Cup. He stopped playing cricket professionally in 1984.
Stan had a long connection with Leek Cricket Club, lasting 60 years! He started as a junior player and later became a committee member and the club secretary. When Stan was secretary in 2001, Leek won three important trophies: the NSSCL Premier Division, the Talbot Cup, and the Staffordshire Cup. He also spent 25 years coaching the Staffordshire Under-19s team.
Stan Trafford passed away on November 19, 2020, at the age of 74. Port Vale Football Club announced his death.
