What is the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs?
The Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs was started in 1952. It was founded by Diana Hay, 23rd Countess of Erroll. She held a special historical role called the Lord High Constable of Scotland.
As of August 2023, the person leading the council is Sir Malcolm MacGregor. He is the chief of Clan Gregor. He took over after the previous leader, Donald MacLaren, passed away in July 2023. Sir Malcolm MacGregor had also been the leader before Mr. MacLaren.
What are the Council's Goals?
The SCSC has clear goals written in its rules. The council is not involved in politics. Its main aims are to:
- Think about issues that affect Scottish Chiefs and their clans.
- Share their ideas and interests with the government in the UK and Scotland.
- Talk to local councils, the news, and the public.
- Connect with groups linked to Scottish clans and families, both in Britain and other countries.
- Help teach people about the rights, duties, and history of Scottish Chiefs.
- Protect the special titles, family symbols (like coats of arms), and other signs of Chiefs. This stops them from being used unfairly in business or other ways.
Chiefs Not Part of the Council
Some chiefs have asked to leave the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. They are no longer members. These include:
- James Carnegie, 3rd Duke of Fife - Chief of Carnegie
- Charles Fergusson - Chief of Fergusson
- Alexander Haig, 3rd Earl Haig - Chief of Haig
- Robert Lindsay, 29th Earl of Crawford and 12th Earl of Balcarres - Chief of Lindsay
