Stangelville is a small, quiet community in Wisconsin, United States. It's located in Kewaunee County, within the town of Franklin. You can find it where County Highways AB and J meet, about 9.5 miles (15.3 km) southwest of Kewaunee.
One of the most important buildings here is St. Lawrence Catholic Church. This church is so special that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Stangelville was started by families who moved here from a region called Bohemia, which was part of the Austrian Empire a long time ago.
How Stangelville Got Its Name
In 1887, the United States Post Office decided to move the post office for the Town of Franklin to this growing community. Joseph N. Tikalsky became the first postmaster of the new office.
When Joseph Tikalsky passed away a year later, his wife, Francis Tikalsky, took over as postmaster. During the next year, officials realized there was another community in Wisconsin already named Franklin. To avoid confusion, the post office was renamed Stangelville. This new name honored Martin Stangl, who was one of the first settlers from Bohemia to arrive in the area.
Life in Early Stangelville
In 1894, the community built a beautiful Gothic-style Catholic church. This was St. Lawrence Catholic Church. It has a very tall steeple, about 150 feet (46 meters) high, which you can see from many miles away.
The center of Stangelville was a busy intersection. On each corner, you would find important businesses. These included the Konop Hotel, the Tikalsky general store, and a cheese factory. There was also John Mach's Saloon and, of course, St. Lawrence Church.
The town also had other important shops. There was a harness maker, Pelnar's Blacksmith Shop, and Konop's slaughterhouse and butcher. All the first people who lived in Stangelville came from Bohemia.
