Stanisław Karczewski (born November 14, 1955) is a Polish politician and a surgeon. He has been an important figure in the Polish government for many years. He served as a Senator, which is like a member of a country's parliament, since 2005. He was also the Marshal of the Senate, a very important leadership role, from 2015 to 2019.
His Journey in Politics
Stanisław Karczewski finished his medical studies in 1981 at the Medical University of Warsaw. After that, he became a specialist in general surgery. He started working at a hospital in New City Pilica in 1981. There, he worked as an assistant director in the emergency room and later became the hospital director. He is currently the head of the Surgery Department at that hospital.
Before becoming a Senator, he worked in local government. From 1998 to 2002, he was part of the local administration in Grójec County. Then, from 2002 to 2005, he was a councilor for the Mazovia region.
In 2005, he was elected as a Senator for the first time. He ran with the Law and Justice party. He was re-elected in 2011 and became the Deputy Marshal of the Senate. This means he helped lead the Senate.
In 2015, he was re-elected again. On November 12, 2015, he was chosen to be the Marshal of the Senate. This is a very high position, similar to a speaker in other parliaments. He held this role for a full four-year term until November 12, 2019. After that, Tomasz Grodzki took over as Marshal. On the same day, Stanisław Karczewski was again appointed Deputy Marshal. He stepped down from this role on May 13, 2020.
