Sir Stanley Ernest Bailey (born September 30, 1926, died August 9, 2008) was an important British police officer. He served as the top police officer, called a chief constable, for Northumbria Police from 1975 to 1991. This means he was in charge of all police operations in that area for many years.
Stanley Bailey was born in Somers Town, London. During World War II, he was asked to work in coal mines as a Bevin Boy. This was a special program where young men helped the war effort by mining coal. After the war, in 1947, he started his career with the Metropolitan Police, which is the main police force for London.
