Star Trek: The Animated Series is an American science fiction TV show. It was created by Gene Roddenberry. This show continues the exciting adventures of the original Star Trek crew.
The show first aired simply as Star Trek. But people started calling it Star Trek: The Animated Series (or TAS). This helped everyone tell it apart from the original live-action Star Trek show. Fans really wanted more Star Trek stories. This led to The Animated Series being made. It ran from 1973 to 1974. It gave fans new adventures of the Enterprise spaceship crew. The next big Star Trek adventure after TAS was a live-action movie in 1979. TAS was the first Star Trek series to win an Emmy Award.

The Story and Characters
Star Trek: The Animated Series follows the brave crew of the starship USS Enterprise. They explore new worlds and meet strange new life forms. The show continues the five-year mission from the original series. Many of the original actors returned to voice their characters. This included William Shatner as Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock.
The animated format allowed for more creative stories. The show could feature alien creatures and planets that were too expensive for the live-action show. It also brought back some popular characters from the original series.
Making the Show
The company that made The Animated Series was called Filmation. They were known for making cartoons. Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, was involved. D. C. Fontana, a writer from the original series, also helped. She was an executive producer.
The show had 22 episodes in total. It was split into two seasons. Each episode was about 24 minutes long. It first aired on the NBC network. The first episode was on September 8, 1973. The last episode aired on October 12, 1974.
Awards and Legacy
Star Trek: The Animated Series made history. It was the first Star Trek show to win an Emmy Award. This award was for Outstanding Entertainment Children's Series. This showed that even an animated version of Star Trek could be very successful.
Even though it was a cartoon, many fans consider TAS to be part of the official Star Trek story. It introduced new ideas and characters. Some of these ideas were later used in other Star Trek shows and movies.
