How CBS Studios Started
Early TV Production at CBS
In 1952, a company called the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) started its own TV show production group. They called it CBS Productions. They also built special places to make shows at Television City in Los Angeles.
CBS also created CBS Television Film Sales. This company helped share TV shows with local TV stations in the U.S. and other countries. In 1970, CBS Films changed its name to Viacom Enterprises. It became a separate company the next year.
In 1963, another important place, CBS Studio Center, was built in Los Angeles.
Paramount Pictures and TV
Paramount Pictures is a famous movie studio. In 1939, they started experimenting with TV stations. By 1949, Paramount Pictures was the first big movie studio to share its TV shows with many stations. This was done through the Paramount Television Network.
Desilu Productions Joins Paramount
Desilu Productions was a company started in 1950 by Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. They were famous actors. In 1967, a company called Gulf and Western Industries bought Desilu Productions.
In July of that year, Desilu became the TV part of Paramount Pictures. It kept the Desilu name until the end of 1967. In 1968, Paramount Television was officially created as the studio's TV production group.
In 1994, a company called Viacom bought Paramount Communications. Viacom then launched a new TV network called UPN in 1995.
In 2004, Viacom combined some of its international TV groups. They also merged CBS Productions and Paramount Network Television. This created a new group called Paramount Network Television, also known as CBS Paramount Television Entertainment Group.
On December 31, 2005, CBS and Viacom split into two separate companies. CBS received Paramount's library of TV shows. The new Viacom company kept Paramount's movies and other TV networks.
CBS Studios is Formed
On January 17, 2006, CBS Corporation announced a big change. Paramount Television was renamed CBS Paramount Television. This was the official start of the company we know today.
Later in 2006, CBS Corporation combined its TV show distribution groups. These groups helped send shows to different places. They formed a new company called CBS Television Distribution.
On May 17, 2009, the "Paramount" name was removed from the company's title. It became simply CBS Television Studios. This happened after CBS had used the Paramount name for about three and a half years.
From 2009 to 2011, most shows made by CBS Television Studios aired on CBS or The CW. Before that, Paramount Television made shows for many different networks.
In 2018, CBS Television Studios announced a new part of their company. It was an animation division called CBS Eye Animation Productions. They also announced a new Star Trek cartoon series called Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Joining Forces Again: ViacomCBS and CBS Studios
On August 13, 2019, it was announced that CBS Corporation and Viacom would join together again. They formed a new company called ViacomCBS. This company is now known as Paramount Global. The merger was completed on December 4, 2019.
For the first time in almost 14 years, the movie studio Paramount Pictures, its current TV division, and CBS's production studio were all under one big company.
On October 8, 2020, CBS Television Studios changed its name again. It became CBS Studios. The word "Television" was removed because the company now makes shows for many different ways people watch TV, not just traditional television.
