History of CBS Studios
How it all started
Before CBS Studios, there were different companies that made TV shows. These companies eventually came together to form CBS Studios.
CBS's early TV shows
In 1952, the company called Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) started making its own TV shows. They built special places to film shows, like Television City in Los Angeles. They also had a company called CBS Television Film Sales. This company helped share TV shows with local stations in the U.S. and other countries.
In 1963, CBS Studio Center was built in Los Angeles. In 1970, CBS Films became Viacom Enterprises. It then became its own separate company.
Paramount Pictures and TV
Paramount Pictures is a famous movie studio. They also got into TV very early. In 1949, Paramount Pictures was the first big movie studio to share its TV shows with many stations. This was through the Paramount Television Network.
Desilu Productions and Paramount TV
Desilu Productions was a company started in 1950 by Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. They bought the RKO Pictures studio in 1957. In 1967, a company called Gulf+Western bought Desilu Productions. Desilu then became the TV part of Paramount Pictures.
Later, in 1994, another company called Viacom bought Paramount. In 1995, Viacom launched a new TV network called UPN.
In 2004, CBS and Paramount's international TV groups joined to form CBS Studios International. Also in 2004, CBS Productions and Paramount Network Television merged. They became a new company called Paramount Network Television.
At the end of 2005, CBS and Viacom split into two separate companies. CBS got to keep the library of Paramount's TV shows. Viacom kept Paramount's movies and other TV networks like MTV.
Forming CBS Studios
On January 17, 2006, the head of CBS Corporation, Les Moonves, announced a big change. Paramount Television was renamed CBS Paramount Television. The part that shared shows with homes became CBS Paramount Domestic Television.
In 2006, CBS Corporation combined its TV show sharing companies. These included King World and CBS Paramount Domestic Television. They formed a new company called CBS Television Distribution (CBSTVD).
On May 17, 2009, the name "Paramount" was removed. The company became known as CBS Television Studios. This happened after CBS had used the Paramount name for about three and a half years.
For a while, CBS Television Studios only made shows for CBS or The CW networks. But later, they started making shows for other networks too. For example, The Game aired on BET in 2011. In 2012, Common Law aired on USA Network.
CBS Television Studios does not directly make shows for Showtime. Showtime is another TV network owned by the same parent company. Instead, Showtime Entertainment makes its own shows. However, CBS Television Distribution helps share these shows with others later.
In 2018, CBS Television Studios started a new animation division. It is called CBS Eye Animation Productions. They announced a new Star Trek cartoon called Star Trek: Lower Decks at the same time.
Becoming CBS Studios today
On August 13, 2019, it was announced that CBS Corporation and Viacom would join together again. They formed a new company called ViacomCBS. This company is now known as Paramount Global. This meant that the movie studio Paramount Pictures, its TV division, and CBS's TV production studio were all under one big company again.
On October 8, 2020, CBS Television Studios changed its name again. It became CBS Studios. The word "Television" was removed because the company makes shows for many different ways people watch TV, not just traditional television.
