History of Start

Before 1868, the area known as Start was part of Morehouse Parish. When Richland Parish was created, this area was called by different names. Some of these names were Ward 3, Crew Lake, Charleston, or Wynn Island.

How Start Got Its Name

The community officially got the name "Start" in 1918. This happened when the United States Postal Service approved it. The name "Charleston" was suggested first, but it was not accepted.

James M. Morgan owned a small store in the area. He was allowed to receive mail at his store. But the community needed a permanent name. James Morgan's daughter, Rachel, had a great idea. She suggested the name Start. She said it was because they were making a new start in the community. The Postal Service officially approved this name on September 7, 1918.

In 2006, a TV show called Louisiana: The State We're In shared this story. It explained how Start got its unique name.

Early Schools and Mail Service

In the summer of 1923, the Richland Parish School Board decided to build a new high school. It would be called Start High School. The first student to graduate from Start High School was Marie Robinson. She graduated in the spring of 1925.

Mail was delivered to both Start and Crew Lake until November 29, 1930. After that date, Crew Lake stopped being a post office. Start then became the main place for mail in the area.

New Families Arrive

In 1937, Congressman Newt V. Mills shared some exciting news. A program called the Resettlement Administration had bought a large piece of land. This program was part of the New Deal, started by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The land was the 3,000-acre Millsaps Plantation. This program helped about 40 new families move into the Start community.
