Who Was Amy Winehouse?
Amy Winehouse (1983–2011) was a very talented British singer and songwriter. She was known for her unique voice and style. Amy loved Camden Town and spent a lot of time there. She became very connected with the area.
About the Statue
The statue is made of bronze, a strong metal. It is about 1.75 meters (5 feet 9 inches) tall. The artist, Scott Eaton, designed it to show Amy's personality.
What the Statue Looks Like
The statue shows Amy with her hand on her hip. She is wearing high heels. Her hair is styled in her famous tall beehive hairstyle. The statue also wears a Star of David necklace. On the day it was first shown, a real red rose was placed in its hair.
The Artist's Vision
Scott Eaton, the British artist, made the statue charcoal grey. He said he wanted it to show Amy's "attitude and strength." But he also wanted to include "subtle hints of insecurity." This means he wanted to show she was strong but also a little bit shy or unsure sometimes.
Scott Eaton got the job after sharing his ideas with Amy Winehouse's father. The statue was not made to look exactly like one specific photo or outfit. Instead, it was meant to combine many of her looks. The artist paid attention to small details. For example, one hand is on her hip, and the other holds the edge of her skirt. Even the way her foot turns inward was meant to give the statue a special "personality."
Where to Find the Statue
The statue was first planned for a music place called the Roundhouse. This venue is in Chalk Farm, which is also nearby. But it was hard for people to get to the Roundhouse easily. So, the statue was moved to the Stables Market instead.
Unveiling the Statue
The statue was officially shown to the public on September 14, 2014. This date would have been Amy Winehouse's 31st birthday. Her friend, the British actress Barbara Windsor, helped to reveal it. Amy's parents, Mitch and Janis Winehouse, were also there for the special event.
