History of the Statue
Who Was Ellis Arnall?
Ellis Arnall was the Governor of Georgia from 1943 to 1947. He was known for his "progressive" ideas. This means he wanted to make things fairer and better for everyone in Georgia.
Important Changes by Governor Arnall
One big change Arnall made was ending the poll tax. This tax used to make people pay money to vote, which stopped many from being able to. He also lowered the voting age in Georgia to 18. This meant younger adults could vote and have a say in their government.
Creating the Statue
Governor Arnall passed away in 1992 when he was 85 years old. After he died, his law firm wanted to honor him with a statue. They worked to make sure a statue was placed on the Capitol grounds.
Unveiling the Monument
The statue was officially shown to the public on November 24, 1997. The governor at that time, Zell Miller, spoke at the special ceremony. The sculptor Zenos Frudakis designed the statue. It faces towards the nearby Central Presbyterian Church. This statue is one of many near the Capitol that honor important governors and other famous people from Georgia.
