The James Stephen Hogg statue is an outdoor sculpture. It shows Jim Hogg, who was an important American lawyer and leader. The artist who created it was Pompeo Coppini.
This statue was first asked for in 1919. It was meant to be part of the Littlefield Fountain at the University of Texas at Austin. The sculpture was placed on the university's South Mall in Austin, Texas in 1933. It stayed there until it was moved in 2017.
The Statue's Story
In 1919, a man named George W. Littlefield gave money to the University of Texas. He wanted to build a special "Memorial Gateway" at the university's south entrance. This gateway was planned to honor soldiers from the American Civil War.
Littlefield hired Pompeo Coppini, a sculptor from Italy who lived in San Antonio. Coppini was asked to design the monument. It was supposed to include statues of important people from Texas and the American South.
However, the memorial plans changed. It became the Littlefield Fountain instead. This fountain was then dedicated to students and alumni of the university. These were people who had died in the Great War, which we now call World War I.
Creating the Statues
As part of this memorial project, Coppini made several bronze statues in the 1920s. One of these was the statue of James Stephen Hogg. He also made five other statues of notable Texans.
Littlefield had chosen these important figures. Coppini planned to place all these statues around the fountain.
Where the Statues Ended Up
But when the fountain was being built in the early 1930s, the university's architect, Paul Cret, had a different idea. He decided to place the six statues along the university's South Mall instead.
So, in 1933, the statues were put in their new spots. This happened when the Littlefield Fountain complex was finished. The James Stephen Hogg statue was one of these.
