About Sidney Herbert's Statue
The statue honors Sidney Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Lea. He was an important British politician. He is remembered for his work to improve conditions for soldiers.
Who Was Sidney Herbert?
Sidney Herbert (1810–1861) was a Member of Parliament. He served in the British government. He was the Secretary at War during the Crimean War (1853–1856). This war was fought between Russia and an alliance including Britain.
Herbert worked hard to help soldiers. He saw how bad conditions were for them. He asked Florence Nightingale to go to Crimea. She helped improve nursing and sanitation. This saved many lives. Herbert was a key figure in these important reforms.
Where is the Statue Now?
The statue has moved a few times. It was first placed in the courtyard of Cumberland House in Pall Mall. This building was the main office for the British Army at the time, called the War Office.
In 1906, the War Office moved to a new building in Whitehall. The statue moved with it. It was placed in the new War Office courtyard. It was not easy for the public to see it there.
Eight years later, in 1914, the statue moved again. Its new home was Waterloo Place. Here, it stands next to the Crimean War Memorial. It is also paired with a statue of Florence Nightingale. This pairing makes sense because they worked together. They both helped reform the army and healthcare.
