Lewisia stebbinsii is a very rare flowering plant. It's often called Stebbins' lewisia. This special plant belongs to the Montiaceae family. You can only find it in California, which means it is endemic to that state.
This plant grows in less than fifteen places. These spots are mostly in the Inner North Coast Ranges. You can find it in Mendocino and Trinity Counties. Many of these places are inside the Mendocino National Forest.
What Stebbins' Lewisia Looks Like
This plant is a perennial herb. This means it lives for more than two years. It grows from a thin taproot and a part called a caudex. The caudex is a short, thick stem.
Leaves and Stems
The plant has a group of leaves at its base. This group is called a basal rosette. The leaves are thick and narrow. They can grow up to about 9 centimeters long. Several stems grow out from this rosette. These stems lie flat on the ground. Each stem holds three or more flowers.
Flowers
The flowers of Stebbins' lewisia are very pretty. They have 7 to 10 petals. The petals are pink or red. Each petal is about 1 to 1.5 centimeters long. The tips of the petals can be blunt or have jagged edges.
