Steens, also known as Jamisons Mill, is a small community in Lowndes County, Mississippi. It is not an official city or town. You can find Steens northeast of Columbus. Its ZIP code is 39766.
History of Steens
Steens is located next to Luxapallila Creek. It was once on the route of the Southern Railway. In 1838, a man named Robert Jamison started a business here. He built a grist mill, a store, and a smithy (a place where metal is shaped). These were all along Luxapallila Creek. He also built several covered bridges in the area.
In 1900, about 26 people lived in Steens. The community used to have a cotton gin, which separates cotton fibers from their seeds. It also sent out large amounts of lumber, fertilizer, and cotton seeds.
A post office served the area. It was called Steenston from 1884 to 1903. After 1903, it became known as Steens.
The Caledonia Combined Cycle Plant is a power plant near Steens. It belongs to the Tennessee Valley Authority. This plant sits on 125 acres of land.
The Steens soil series is a type of soil named after this community.
