The Steep Falls Library, also known as the Pierce Memorial Library, is a public library. You can find it in the village of Steep Falls, Maine in the town of Standish, Maine, USA. This beautiful building was a gift to the community. Henry Pierce, who grew up in Standish, funded its construction. He became very successful in business in California. The library was built in 1917 and made bigger in 1924. It is a lovely building with a Colonial Revival style. Because of its history and design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
The Library's Cool Design and Story
The Steep Falls Library is on the southwest side of Pequawket Trail. This road is also known as Maine State Route 113. The library sits behind a curved driveway. It is a one-story building made of brick. It has a special roof shape called a hip roof.
What Does the Building Look Like?
The front of the library has two parts that stick out. The part on the right is a porch with a pointed roof. It has strong granite columns. The part on the left is an enclosed entrance. It has a simpler design. The right entrance has a round arch. Windows are set around this arched door.
Between these two entrances, there is a section with a gently sloping roof. This section has three groups of windows. Each group has a narrow window, then a wide one, then another narrow one. On the sides of the entrances, you can see Palladian windows. These are large windows with three parts. The corners of the building have special brick designs. Inside, the library still has its original Colonial Revival style. You can see this in the woodwork and decorations.
Who Built the Library?
The right side of the library was designed by Edward F. Fassett. It was finished in 1917. Mr. Fassett passed away in 1922. This library might have been one of his last projects. Henry Pierce paid for the library to be built. He was from Steep Falls. He made a lot of money selling supplies during the California Gold Rush.
The left side of the library was added in 1924. This part holds the children's room. It was designed by a father and son team. Their names were John Calvin Stevens and John Howard Stevens. Standish has another public library too. It is in the village of Richville.
