Stefan Lippe (born October 11, 1955 – died March 27, 2020) was an important German business leader in the insurance world. He was the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of a large company called Swiss Re. He held this top position from 2009 until 2012. After him, Michel M. Liès became the new CEO of Swiss Re.

Stefan Lippe's Early Life and Education
Stefan Lippe was born in a city called Mannheim, Germany. He went to the University of Mannheim where he studied two subjects: mathematics and economics. He finished his studies in 1982. After graduating, he worked as a research assistant at the university. He helped with studies in a field called actuarial science. This is a special type of math used to figure out risks, especially for insurance companies. He even won an award for his important research paper.
His Journey in the Insurance World
In October 1983, Stefan Lippe started working at Bavarian Re in Munich. This company was a part of Swiss Re, which is one of the biggest reinsurance companies in the world. Reinsurance is like insurance for insurance companies.
- In 1986, he became the head of a department that dealt with special types of insurance.
- By 1988, he was a deputy member of the company's main management team.
- In 1991, he became fully responsible for the company's business in German-speaking countries. He also became a full member of the Management Board.
- In 1993, he was made the Chairman of the Executive Board at Bavarian Re.
- In 1995, he joined the larger management team of Swiss Re itself. He was in charge of the entire Bavarian Re Group.
- By 2001, he was leading the Property & Casualty Business Group. This group handles insurance for things like homes and cars. He was also elected to Swiss Re's Executive Board.
Becoming CEO of Swiss Re
In September 2008, Stefan Lippe became the Chief Operating Officer and Deputy CEO of Swiss Re. This meant he was helping to run the company's daily operations and was second in command.
In February 2009, Swiss Re faced a very difficult time. The company was in serious financial trouble and needed a lot of money to keep going. Stefan Lippe was appointed CEO during this emergency. He took over the leadership role to help guide the company through this tough period.
Later Career and Legacy
After leaving Swiss Re in 2012, Stefan Lippe continued to be active in the business world.
- He helped start two companies called Acqupart Holding AG and Acqufin AG. He was the Vice Chairman on the board of directors for Acqupart Holding AG.
- He also helped create Paperless Inc., which is now known as yes.com AG. He was the Chairman of the board for this company.
- He was also the Chairman of the board for CelsiusPro AG.
- In 2012, he joined the board of directors for AXA, another large insurance company. The next year, he became the Chairman of AXA's Audit Committee.
Stefan Lippe passed away on March 27, 2020. His death was due to health problems from COVID-19.
