Stefani Robinson is an American writer and producer who creates stories for television shows and movies. A writer for a show is often called a screenwriter. She is famous for her work on the FX comedy series Atlanta and the vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows.
Her writing has earned her many awards and nominations, including two Writers Guild of America Awards. She also wrote the screenplay for the 2023 movie Chevalier, which tells the true story of a famous musician.
Growing Up and Finding Her Passion
When Robinson was eight years old, her family moved from Hong Kong to Marietta, Georgia, a city near Atlanta. In high school, she discovered the TV show The Mighty Boosh on YouTube. Watching it helped her find her own unique style of writing.
Some of her other favorite movies that inspired her include Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Austin Powers, and Baz Luhrmann’s version of Romeo + Juliet. When she was a teenager, she took comedy classes and performed on stage at The Second City Training Center in Hollywood. Later, she went to Emerson College to study screenwriting.
Writing for Television and Film
Robinson began her career working as an assistant at a talent agency. Her big break came when she sent a script to the TV network FX. They were so impressed that they hired her to write for the show Atlanta. In the writer's room for the show, she was the only woman and the youngest person there.
Robinson is known for her creative ideas and has said that her writing comes from her own unique point of view, not just from being a woman or from her race. Her work on the Atlanta episode "Barbershop" earned her a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award.
In 2017, Robinson signed a deal with FX to create and produce new shows. She worked as a writer and co-executive producer on the vampire show What We Do in the Shadows until 2020. For that show, she was nominated for Emmys for the episodes "On the Run" and "The Wellness Center".
Her first movie, Chevalier, was a biopic (a movie about a real person's life) about the musician Chevalier de Saint-Georges. It was released in 2022.
