Her Journey in Mathematics
Stefanie Petermichl first studied at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Then, she went to the Michigan State University in the United States. She earned her Ph.D. in math there in the year 2000. Her teacher was Alexander Volberg.
After finishing her Ph.D., she continued her research at places like the Institute for Advanced Study and Brown University. In 2005, she became a professor at the University of Texas at Austin.
Later, she moved to France. She taught at the University of Bordeaux starting in 2007. In 2009, she moved to the University of Toulouse. Since 2019, she has also held a special teaching position called the Humboldt chair at the University of Würzburg in Germany.
Awards and Honors
Stefanie Petermichl has won several important awards for her math work.
In 2006, she received the Salem Prize. This award was given to her for her important discoveries about certain types of math problems. She was the first woman ever to win this prize, which was a big achievement!
The French Academy of Sciences gave her their Ernest Déchelle Prize in 2012. In 2013, she became a member of the Institut Universitaire de France. This is a group for top university researchers in France.
