Stefano Mei was born on February 3, 1963, in La Spezia, Italy. He is a famous Italian long-distance runner. He was especially good at races like the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters.

Stefano Mei won a European Championship in the 10,000 meters race in 1986. Since January 31, 2021, he has been the president of the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL). This is the main organization for athletics in Italy.

Stefano Mei's Life and Career

Stefano Mei won eight medals in major international athletics competitions. He also took part in two Summer Olympics (in 1984 and 1988). He represented Italy in the national team 42 times between 1981 and 1994.

During his running career, he won the national championships eight times. Before becoming president, Stefano Mei was a Federal Councillor for the Federazione Italiana di Atletica Leggera (FIDAL) starting from December 2, 2012.

Stefano Mei competed in many important races around the world. He won several medals for Italy. Here are some of his biggest achievements:

  • In 1985, he won a gold medal in the 5,000 meters at the Universiade in Kobe, Japan. He also earned a silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the World Cup in Canberra, Australia.
  • The year 1986 was very successful for him. He won a silver medal in the 3,000 meters at the European Indoor Championships in Madrid, Spain.
  • At the European Championships in Stuttgart, West Germany, he won a gold medal in the 10,000 meters. He also took home a silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the same event.
  • In 1989, he won another gold medal in the 5,000 meters at the Universiade in Duisburg, West Germany.
  • In 1990, he earned a bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the European Championships in Split, Yugoslavia.

He also competed in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Stefano Mei was also a champion in his home country. He won the individual national championship 8 times.
