Who Was Stefanos Stratigos?
Stefanos Stratigos was born in Athens, Greece, in 1923. He came from a family of actors. His parents, Vasileios and Amalia Stratigos, were both actors. His sisters, Aleka, Stella, and Rena, also became actors. It seems acting ran in their family!
Stefanos studied acting at the Drama School, which was then called the Royal Theatre of Greece. This is where he learned all the skills he needed to become a professional actor.
His Early Acting Career
Stefanos started his acting journey by performing in plays with his father. He acted in many different types of shows, including comedies, serious dramas, and tragedies. After gaining experience, he joined the acting company of Vasilis Logothetidis, a well-known actor at the time.
Stefanos made his first stage appearance in a play called Enas aprosklitos moussafiris. He also performed in other plays like The Trojan War and Santa Chiquita. He worked with many famous actors and companies, including Horn-Lampeti and the Iliopoulos company. He even performed in plays written by famous Greek writers like Alekos Sakellarios and Dimitris Psathas.
In 1963, Stefanos started his own acting company with his first wife, Gely Mavropoulou. They put on plays like Red Lights.
Tours and Later Performances
In 1965, Stefanos and his company toured Northern Greece. They performed at the Alhambra Theatre. He acted alongside other well-known actors such as Dionyssis Papayiannopoulos and Marika Krevata.
Stefanos also went on tours around the world. He traveled with other famous Greek actors like Nikos Xanthopoulos and Thanassis Vengos, performing modern Greek plays. In 1984, he went on a tour to the United States with actors Giannis Evangelidis and Sperantza Vrana. They performed a play called Ego psifizo agapi (which means I Vote for Love). He continued performing with his company until the mid-1980s.

Stefanos Stratigos acted in about 85 movies! His first movie role was in Koritsi tis tavernas. He also appeared in many other important Greek films, such as:

He also acted in television shows, including Police Stories and Eastern Winds. Stefanos was known for playing strong and serious characters in his films and plays. Even though he played tough roles on screen, in real life, he was a calm and kind person.
Stefanos Stratigos passed away on April 6, 2006, at the age of 83, due to breathing problems. He was buried in Peristeri.
