Stefi Baum is a well-known American astronomer. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 11, 1958. The American Astronomical Society recognized her important work by giving her the Annie J. Cannon Prize in 1993. Stefi Baum also played a part in developing the amazing Hubble Space Telescope. From 2004, she was the director of the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Early Life and Education

Stefi Baum was born in Chicago, Illinois. Her father, Leonard Baum, was a mathematician. She went to Princeton Public High School in Princeton, New Jersey, and finished in 1976.

Stefi Baum studied physics at Harvard University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. She then went on to get her PhD in astronomy from the University of Maryland. Today, she is the dean of the Faculty of Science and a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Manitoba.

Stefi Baum's Career in Astronomy

Stefi Baum has had a very busy and important career in science. She is currently the dean of the faculty of science and a professor at the University of Manitoba.

Before this, she was a special fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study from September 2011 to July 2012. From 2002 to 2004, Stefi Baum worked as a Senior Science/Diplomacy Fellow with the US Department of State.

She also worked at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) for many years. From 1999 to 2002, she was the head of engineering and software services there. She also helped lead the science and engineering support division in 1999. From 1996 to 1998, she was the chief of the Spectrographs Team at STScI. Before that, from 1991 to 1995, she was an archive scientist, helping to organize and store important space data.

In 1990 and 1991, Stefi Baum had a fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. From 1987 to 1990, she did astronomy research in the Netherlands. She is also a member of the International Astronomical Union, a group of astronomers from all over the world.

Awards and Achievements

Stefi Baum has received many awards for her contributions to astronomy and science leadership. Some of her notable awards include:

  • 1993: Annie Jump Cannon Award. This award is given each year to a young female astronomer for excellent scientific work.
  • 1993: Space Telescope Science Institute Group Achievement Award for developing the archive system.
  • 1993: Space Telescope Science Institute Individual Achievement Award for her work on the archive system.
  • 1996: Space Telescope Science Institute Group Achievement Award for the Data Quality Project.
  • 1996: Space Telescope Science Institute Individual Achievement Award for the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph.
  • 1996: Space Telescope Science Institute Group Achievement Award for the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph Team.
  • 1999: NASA Excellence Award for her work on the Hubble Space Telescope Servicing Mission 3A.
  • 1999: Rolex Achievement Award. This award is given to college lacrosse players for their career achievements that help society.
  • 2002: Space Telescope Science Institute Individual Achievement Award for her management and leadership skills.
  • 2002/2003: American Institute of Physics - US State Department Fellowship.
  • 2005: Rochester Institute of Technology Million Dollar Club. She joined this club for getting over one million dollars in grants for research.
  • 2020: Elected a Legacy Fellow of the American Astronomical Society.
