Steinacleit facts for kids
Steinacleit is a very old and mysterious place on the west coast of Lewis, an island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It's an archaeological site, which means it's a place where people study things from the past.
This site is made up of many large rocks and boulders. These stones are what's left of an ancient burial place called a chambered cairn. It's also thought that a huge hall might have been built over this burial site a long, long time ago. There are ten big stone slabs that stand around a central mound of earth. The site itself is shaped like an oval and is about 50 feet (or 15 meters) wide.
People in the Outer Hebrides have a folk legend about Steinacleit. They say that a big battle might have happened near this spot in ancient times. The exact age of Steinacleit is a bit of a puzzle for experts. Some think it was built between 1800 and 1500 BC, while others believe it's even older, dating back to 3000 to 1500 BC.
If you look to the southwest from Steinacleit, you can see another famous ancient stone. This is the tall standing stone known as Clach an Trushal.
