Steins Peak got its name from a brave U.S. Army officer. His name was Major Enoch Steen. He explored this area in the mid-1800s.

The mountain was a very important guide for travelers. It helped them find their way through the Peloncillo Mountains. This path was known as Doubtful Canyon. It was part of the Butterfield Overland Mail route. This was a famous stagecoach service that delivered mail and passengers across the country. A station for this service, called Steins Peak Station, was built nearby.
