Stela Popescu (born December 21, 1935 – died November 23, 2017) was a famous Romanian actress and TV personality. Many people thought she was the best comedy actress in Romania's history. She was also one of the top female actresses of all time.
Stela Popescu was part of two very famous acting duos. First, she worked with Ștefan Bănică Sr.. Later, she teamed up with Alexandru Arșinel.
In 2006, 2011, and 2017, the Disney Pixar company chose Stela Popescu to be the Romanian voice of Flo. Flo is a character in the animated Cars movie series.

Early Life and Education
Stela Popescu was born in a small village called Slobozia-Hodorogea, in the Orhei area. Her parents were both teachers.
When she was young, her family faced difficult times. In 1940, her father was taken away and she did not know what happened to him for 19 years. In 1944, her mother took Stela and moved to Brașov in Romania to find safety.
In 1953, Stela started college to study Russian. However, after about a year and a half, she left that course. She decided to join the Theater of the Ministry of the Interior instead. In 1956, she was accepted into the Institute of Theater and Cinematography. She continued to act in plays while she was studying.
A Long and Successful Career
After finishing her studies, Stela Popescu started working at the Theater in Brașov. She was very busy, performing in about 400 shows every year! From 1963 to 1969, she performed at the Constantin Tănase Theater.
In 1969, Stela joined the Comedy Theater. She also worked with the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company for many years, from 1963 all the way until 2017. She married Mihai Maximilian, a journalist, in 1969. They worked together on many projects.
Theater Performances
Stela Popescu was famous for her shows at the Boema Garden. These performances were very popular with audiences. For 24 years, she performed at the Comedy Theater during the summer. When the theater season ended, she would perform at the Boema Garden.
She acted in the Comedy Theater from 1969 until 1993. Then, she returned to the "Constantin Tănase" Theater. Stela Popescu was brilliant in plays like "The man who saw death" and "Boema, my weakness." She performed for 18 years in The Premiere, 12 years in Petitioner, and 10 years in The Envelope. She worked with many talented directors.
Working with Famous Partners
From 1971 to 1979, Stela Popescu performed as a comedy duo with Ștefan Bănică. They appeared together on stage and on TV. Starting in 1979, she began working with Alexandru Arșinel. Their shows were often written by Mihai Maximilian.
Film and Television Work
Stela Popescu started acting in movies in 1958 with a film called Alo? You got the wrong number. She appeared in more than 25 films. Some of her well-known movies include Nea Mărin Billionaire (1979) and On the Left Bank of the Blue Danube (1983).
She was also a big star on television from the very beginning of TV in Romania. She appeared in many theater and entertainment shows. TVR released DVDs like Star through the Stars (2006) and Stela and Arșinel (2005). These DVDs showed some of her best TV moments.
From the mid-1990s, Stela Popescu hosted TV shows for women on different channels. She also acted in several TV series. These included Cuscrele (2005–2006), The War of the Sexes (2007–2008), and Queen (2008–2009). In these shows, she often played memorable characters like Coana Chiva. In 2011, she made a special appearance in Love and Honor.
Later Life and Passing
Stela Popescu passed away on November 23, 2017, at her home in Bucharest. Her adopted daughter, Doina Maximilian, found her. The doctors said she died from a stroke.
Her body was shown at the Constantin Tănase Theater for people to say goodbye. She was buried on November 26 at the Cernica cemetery.
