Stephan Elliott started his career in the 1980s. He worked as an assistant director in the Australian film industry. This helped him learn how movies are made.

His first two major films were Frauds (1993) and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994). Both were produced by Latent Image Productions. Frauds even starred the musician Phil Collins.
