Becoming an Artist
Stephanie Syjuco studied art at different schools. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in sculpture in 1995. This was from the San Francisco Art Institute.
Later, she went to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1997. She then earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from Stanford University in 2005.
Stephanie's Art Work
Stephanie Syjuco creates art in many ways. She uses photography, sculptures, and art installations. Her work often mixes handmade crafts with digital tools. She also looks through old archives to find ideas.
Her projects explore how money and power work in the world. She also looks at how images and photos can shape history. She shows how they can sometimes create unfair stories about people.
One of her early art themes was about real versus fake things. She looked at how this affects workers and money in our world. In 2009, she made an art piece called Copystand: An autonomous manufacturing zone. She set it up at an art fair in London. There, she and her friends made copies of famous artworks. They sold these copies at much lower prices. This made people think about the value of art.
Stephanie is also a dedicated teacher. She is a professor in the Art Practice Department at the University of California Berkeley. She joined the university in 2013. Before that, she taught at many other art programs.
Her art is shown in many important museums. These include the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her work is also at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She has won special awards for her art. These include a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014. In 2018, she was featured on the TV show Art21: Art in the 21st Century.
In 2019, Stephanie had a big art show called Rogue States. It was at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. In 2024, she opened After/Images. This exhibit focused on photos and videos of Filipino people. It showed how colonialism affected them through images.
