Stephen Beckwith was born in England in 1623. He was one of the first people to settle the town of Norwalk in Connecticut. He likely came to America from Ipswich, England, in 1634 when he was about eleven years old.
Stephen Beckwith's Journey to America
Stephen Beckwith traveled to America when he was a young boy. He first lived in Hartford by 1649. Later, before 1655, he moved to Norwalk.
Life as a Planter in Norwalk
Stephen Beckwith was a planter, meaning he owned and worked a farm. In March 1663, he sold his farm to another settler named Richard Homes. Stephen Beckwith continued to live in Norwalk for many years, staying there until at least 1687.
Honoring a Founder
Stephen Beckwith is remembered as one of the important people who helped start Norwalk. His name is carved on the Founders Stone. This special stone lists the names of the first settlers of Norwalk and is located in the East Norwalk Historical Cemetery.
