Stephen Charnock's Life Story

Stephen Charnock went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, for his studies. While he was there, he became a Christian and started his journey as a Puritan leader. After college, he might have worked as a private teacher. Later, he became a minister in Southwark, helping people learn about Christianity. He then went to New College, Oxford, where he earned a special position called a fellowship and became a senior proctor, which is like a senior official at the university.

Moving to Ireland

In 1656, Charnock moved to Ireland. There, he became a chaplain for Henry Cromwell, who was in charge of Ireland at the time. In Dublin, Charnock started preaching regularly to many people. People from all different backgrounds and churches came to listen to him. He became very famous for how well he taught and shared his beliefs.

Changes in England

In 1660, the king returned to power in England after a period without a king. This new king, Charles II, brought in new rules. Because of these rules, Stephen Charnock was no longer allowed to preach publicly in Ireland or in England, where he returned. Even though he couldn't preach in public, he kept studying and teaching people in private.

Last Years of Ministry

In 1675, Charnock began working as a co-pastor at Crosby Hall in London. This was his last official place of ministry. He continued to serve there until he passed away in 1680.

Stephen Charnock's Writings

Most of Stephen Charnock's many writings were written down and published after he died. His most famous work is called Discourses upon the Existence and Attributes of God. This book was a series of talks he gave to his church members at Crosby Hall. Sadly, he died before he could finish all the talks.

The book was published after his death in 1682. Today, it is known as The Existence and Attributes of God. It is still an important book for people who study Christian beliefs.
