Stephen Henderson (born November 23, 1970) is an American journalist. He is known for his work in Detroit, Michigan. Henderson won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for commentary. This is a very important award for journalists. He also received the 2014 National Association of Black Journalists Journalist of the Year Award. He earned these awards while writing for the Detroit Free Press.

Today, Henderson hosts "Detroit Today." This is a weekday talk show on WDET-FM, Detroit's NPR station. The show talks about important topics like fairness for everyone. It also discusses how people can get involved in their communities. He also hosts "American Black Journal" on Detroit Public Television. This show shares African American viewpoints on art, culture, and community issues.

Early Life and Education

Stephen Henderson grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He went to the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and graduated in 1988. After high school, he attended the University of Michigan. He graduated from there in 1992. While at the University of Michigan, he worked for the student newspaper, The Michigan Daily.

Journalism Career

Henderson has worked for many newspapers. These include the Baltimore Sun, the Chicago Tribune, and the Lexington Herald-Leader. He also worked for Knight Ridder. He was a reporter, an editor, and wrote opinion pieces. From 2009 to 2017, he was the Editorial Page Editor and a columnist for the Detroit Free Press.

Since 2015, Henderson has hosted "Detroit Today" on WDET. He also hosts "American Black Journal" on Detroit Public Television. He used to co-host "MiWeek" on Detroit Public Television as well. In 2014, he won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary. He also won the National Association of Black Journalists Journalist of the Year Award. These awards were for his writing about Detroit's financial challenges. He has also won the Scripps Howard Award for Commentary two times.

In December 2017, Stephen Henderson left the Detroit Free Press. He later reached an agreement with the newspaper's owner. In November 2024, Henderson announced he was leaving Detroit public radio. This meant his show "Created Equal" would end.

Personal Life

Stephen Henderson lives in Detroit. He has two children.
