He started his career as a history and government teacher. He taught in Newark's public schools for 15 years. While teaching, he earned a master's degree in education from Seton Hall University in 1960. He also completed studies for a higher doctorate degree in education. In 2010, Kean University gave him an honorary doctorate degree.
Public Service and Community Work
In 1962, Adubato became a Democratic District Leader in Newark's North Ward. A "District Leader" is someone chosen by voters to represent their local area in a political party. In 1968, he was elected to lead the Democratic party in the North Ward.

Founding The North Ward Center

Robert Treat Academy Charter School
In 1997, The North Ward Center started the Robert Treat Academy Charter School. This was one of the first "charter schools" approved by the New Jersey Department of Education. A charter school is a public school that operates independently.
The Robert Treat Academy teaches 675 students from kindergarten to 8th grade. In 2008, the United States Department of Education recognized Robert Treat as a "Blue Ribbon school." This award means it's a very high-performing school. In 2009, Robert Treat opened a second campus. It was located in the old St. Mary's school building at the Newark Abbey.
In August 2009, Adubato stepped down from his role as the main leader of The North Ward Center. His daughter, Michele Adubato, is now the CEO.
