Steve Molitor's Boxing Journey

Early Life and Amateur Fights

Steve Molitor grew up in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. He started boxing when he was just nine years old, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Jeremy Molitor, who was also a successful boxer. Steve was very good at boxing from a young age. He won five national titles in the 112-pound weight class. Before turning professional, he had an impressive amateur record, winning 93 fights and only losing eleven.

Becoming a Professional Boxer

Steve Molitor officially became a professional boxer on May 18, 2000. His very first professional fight was against Julio Luna, and Steve won by a decision after eight rounds.

In 2002, Steve had a big win when he defeated former Olympian Scotty Olson. This victory earned him the Canadian super-bantamweight title. Later that same year, he traveled to England and beat Nicky Booth to become the Commonwealth bantamweight champion. On April 21, 2004, Steve won another title, the NABA North American title, by defeating Hugo Dianzo.

Winning World Titles

One of the biggest moments in Steve's career happened on November 10, 2006. He fought Michael Hunter for the vacant IBF super-bantamweight championship title. Steve won this important fight by knocking out Hunter in the fifth round, becoming a world champion!

He successfully defended his IBF title several times.

  • On July 14, 2007, he defeated Takalani Ndlovu from South Africa.
  • On October 27, he won against Fahsan 3K Battery from Thailand.
  • On January 19, 2008, he defended his title against Ricardo Castillo.
  • On April 5, 2008, Steve continued his winning streak, defeating Fernando Beltran Jr. This win brought his professional record to an amazing 27 wins and no losses!

Most of these exciting title defenses took place at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, which became a special place for his fans.

Challenges and Comebacks

In 2008, Steve Molitor changed trainers, working with Stéphan Larouche for a while. On August 29, 2008, he defended his title again, this time against the undefeated Ceferino Labarda, winning by TKO.

However, on November 21, 2008, Steve faced a tough challenge. He fought Celestino Caballero from Panama in a fight to unify his IBF title with the WBA title. Steve lost this fight by TKO in the fourth round, which meant he lost his IBF super-bantamweight title.

But Steve didn't give up! He continued to fight.

  • On June 26, 2009, he won a close fight against Heriberto Ruiz.
  • He reunited with his former trainer, Chris Johnson, and on September 4, 2009, he won by knockout against Feliciano Ledezma.
  • On November 21, 2009, he defeated Jose Saez.

Steve Molitor showed his determination on March 27, 2010. He fought Takalani Ndlovu again, the same boxer he had defeated in 2007. This time, Steve won by a unanimous decision after 12 rounds, and he proudly regained the IBF Junior Featherweight (super-bantamweight) championship!

He defended his title once more on September 11, 2010, against Jason Booth.
