Steve David Perry (born 1969) is an American educator, author, and TV personality. He became well known after a CNN show called Black in America featured him and the school he started, Capital Preparatory School in Hartford, Connecticut. He is also known for appearing on the TV show Iyanla: Fix My Life.
Dr. Perry has strong opinions about how schools should be run. He has hosted talk shows like Breakthrough With Dr. Steve Perry and Save My Son. He also wrote articles for Essence magazine.

About Steve Perry
Steve Perry grew up in Middletown, Connecticut. His family has a mixed background, with a Caucasian mother and an African-American father. He earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice. He also received a doctor of education degree from the University of Hartford.
Early Career and School Founding
In 1998, Steve Perry ran for the state legislature but did not win. That same year, he started ConnCAP at Capital Community College. This program helped students in Connecticut prepare for college.
In 2005, he founded his first school, Capital Prep Magnet School, in Hartford, Connecticut. This was a magnet school under the Hartford Board of Education. In 2014, Dr. Perry left Capital Prep Hartford due to disagreements about how the school was run. Later, an audit found some issues with how students were admitted to Capital Prep Hartford when he was in charge.
Expanding the Capital Prep Schools
In 2015, Dr. Perry opened his first charter school, Capital Prep Harbor School, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Another school, Capital Prep Harlem School, opened in 2016. This school was started in partnership with the famous artist Diddy. A year later, Capital Prep Harbor Lower School opened in Bridgeport. In 2020, his fourth school campus opened in the Bronx, New York. This was also a partnership with Diddy. In 2023, Dr. Perry ended his partnership with Diddy. In 2024, some people who worked at the East Harlem school raised concerns about the school's environment.
Books and TV Appearances
In 2011, Steve Perry's book, Push Has Come to Shove, was published. In 2016, he helped write Steve Harvey's book, Jump: Take the Leap of Faith to Achieve Your Life of Abundance. In 2017, his Capital Preparatory Charter Schools network received money from the Charles Koch Foundation.
Dr. Perry has been a part of CNN's documentary Black in America. He has also reported for shows like Anderson Cooper 360 and American Morning with his reports called Perry's Principles. He is also an education advisor to Oprah Winfrey. In 2018, his talk show, Breakthrough With Dr. Steve Perry, began airing on Fox and CBS network stations.
