Steve David Perry, born in 1969, is an American educator, author, and TV personality. He is well-known for starting schools and helping students succeed. He also shares his ideas about education on TV shows and in books. He became famous after a CNN show called Black in America featured him and the school he founded.
About Steve Perry
Steve Perry grew up in Middletown, Connecticut. He has always been passionate about helping young people.
His Work in Education
In 1998, Steve Perry started a program called ConnCAP. This program helped students in Connecticut learn about college and prepare for their future studies.
In 2005, he opened his first school, Capital Prep Magnet School, in Hartford, Connecticut. This was the beginning of his group of schools, Capital Preparatory Schools. Later, more schools were opened:
- In 2015, Capital Prep Harbor School opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
- In 2016, Capital Prep Harlem School opened in partnership with the famous artist Diddy.
- In 2017, Capital Prep Harbor Lower School opened its doors in Bridgeport.
- In 2020, his fifth school campus opened in the Bronx, New York. This was also in partnership with Diddy.
In 2017, his group of schools received support from the Charles Koch Foundation. Steve Perry has often spoken about the importance of good schools for all children.
On TV and as an Author
Steve Perry has hosted TV shows like Breakthrough With Dr. Steve Perry and Save My Son. He has also written articles for Essence magazine.
He was featured in the CNN documentary Black in America. He has also reported for shows like Anderson Cooper 360 and American Morning with his segments called Perry's Principles. He is also an education advisor to Oprah Winfrey.
In 2018, his talk show, Breakthrough With Dr. Steve Perry, began airing on Fox and CBS network stations.
