Steven Furtick was born on February 19, 1980. He is an American evangelical Christian pastor, author, and songwriter. He is known for founding Elevation Church, a large church based in Charlotte, North Carolina. He also helps write songs for the music group Elevation Worship.

Early Life and Education

Steven Furtick grew up in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. When he was 16, he felt a strong desire to become a pastor and lead a church in a big city.

He went to North Greenville University and earned a degree in communication. Later, he continued his studies at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree.

Starting a Church and Ministry

In 2004, Steven Furtick worked as a worship leader at a church in Shelby, North Carolina. Two years later, in 2006, he moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. There, he started Elevation Church with seven other families and his own family. The church held its very first service on February 5, 2006.

Music and Community Work

In 2007, Steven Furtick helped create the music group Elevation Worship. He writes songs for the group, and they have won a Grammy Award for their album, Old Church Basement.

Also in 2007, his church made news when they gave $40,000 to members. The money was given in envelopes with different amounts, from $5 to $1,000. Members were asked to use the money to help others in kind ways.

Steven Furtick speaks at events around the world. In 2016, he was recognized by Oprah Winfrey as one of 100 influential leaders.

Helping the Community

In 2012, Steven Furtick started a program called the M1 Initiative at Elevation Church. This program aimed to find mentors for 1,000 students in local schools. More than 1,600 church members volunteered to mentor a child for the 2012–2013 school year.

Steven Furtick has also made a commitment for Elevation Church to donate 12 percent of its offerings. This money goes to support outreach efforts both in the United States and around the world.
