Moncks Corner is a town in South Carolina, United States. It is the main town, also known as the county seat, of Berkeley County, South Carolina. In 2020, about 13,297 people lived there. Moncks Corner is part of the larger Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville area.

History of Moncks Corner

The area where Moncks Corner is located has been home to people for thousands of years. The Edistow people, a group related to the Cusabo tribes, lived here. They had their own language. Today, some families in the Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians are descendants of these early groups. This tribe was officially recognized by the state in 2009.

Early European Settlers

During the colonial era, many French Protestants, called Huguenots, came to South Carolina. They arrived between 1684 and 1688. They were seeking safety because they faced religious persecution in France. Many family names in this area today are French. These French settlers often married English colonists.

The town of Moncks Corner started around 1728. It is named after Thomas Monck, an early landowner. The town began as a trading post with a few shops and places to stay. A battle, called the Battle of Monck's Corner, happened here in 1780 during the American Revolutionary War. This battle was connected to the Siege of Charleston.

Moncks Corner is known as the "Capital of Santee Cooper Country." This name was given to it in 1999 and again in 2004. It shows that the town has many outdoor activities. These include horseback riding, hiking, water sports, boating, and freshwater fishing. The main office for Santee Cooper, a large public power company, is also located here.
