Lake Moultrie is the third largest lake in South Carolina. It was made in the 1940s by a state project. This project built a dam on the Cooper River. The lake covers more than 60,000 acres (240 km2). It is a great place for many fun activities, especially fishing.

Lake Moultrie is found in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Water flows into it from the Cooper River. This water first passes through Lake Marion and a special canal.

Some towns close to Lake Moultrie are Moncks Corner, Bonneau, Cross, and St. Stephen.

How Lake Moultrie Was Made

Lake Moultrie was created in the early 1940s. A state agency called the South Carolina Public Service Authority built it. They built the Pinopolis Dam on the Cooper River. This huge project helped control floods and make electricity.

The lake covers about 60,000 acres (240 km2) of land. It was named after Governor William Moultrie, who was a leader in South Carolina. Today, the lake is also a popular spot for many outdoor activities.

Fishing in Lake Moultrie

Lake Moultrie is a fantastic place for fishing. It has many different types of areas for fish to live. You can find shallow swamps and dark water ponds. There are also thousands of tree stumps and living cypress trees. Large open areas of water are also part of the lake.

The lake never freezes in the winter, so you can fish all year. A world record channel catfish was caught here. It weighed 58 lb (26 kg)! The lake also holds the state record for black crappie, weighing 5 pounds.
