In 2010, Holl started 'T' Space. This is an arts organization in Rhinebeck (village), New York. Its goal is to combine art, architecture, music, and poetry.
'T' Space holds art shows in the summer. It also has a summer program for young architects. In this program, students learn to design buildings. They focus on how design affects the environment.
'T' Space also publishes books. It has a 30-acre nature reserve with outdoor art. In 2019, an archive and library were built there. This building holds Holl's watercolor paintings. It also stores his models and drawings from over 40 years of work.
Notable Architectural Designs
Early Projects
In 1988, Steven Holl won a competition. He designed an expansion for the American Memorial Library in Berlin. In 1989, his work was shown at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. MoMA later bought 25 of his works for their collection.
In 1992, Holl won another competition. He designed a new museum in Helsinki, Finland. His design was called "Chiasma." The museum opened in 1998 and is now called Kiasma.
Chapel of St. Ignatius
Holl designed the Chapel of St. Ignatius at Seattle University. It was built from 1994 to 1997. He wanted to create more green space on campus. So, he put the chapel in the middle of a former street. This created new green areas around the building.
The chapel's design was inspired by a vision. It has "seven bottles of light in a stone box." This means it has seven different sections. Each section lets in light in a unique way. The glass is colored differently in each part. This makes different areas of the chapel glow with colored light. In 2022, this chapel won the Twenty-five Year Award. This award is given to buildings that have stood the test of time.
