Steven Charles Kanumba (born January 8, 1984 – died April 7, 2012) was a famous actor and director from Tanzania. He was part of the Sukuma people and was born in the Shinyanga Region. Steven Kanumba was known as "Tanzania's most popular film star." He even appeared in films from Nollywood, which is the Nigerian film industry. Sadly, he passed away in 2012 when he was just 28 years old. Many people, about 30,000, attended his funeral to say goodbye.

Steven Kanumba's Early Life and Education

Steven Kanumba grew up in a Sukuma family in the Shinyanga Region of Northern Tanzania. His father was Charles Kanumba, and his mother was Flora Mutegoa. Steven had three older sisters.

He started his schooling at Bugoyi Primary School. For his secondary education, he went to Mwadui Secondary School and then Vosa Mission Secondary School. He completed his higher education at Jitegemee High School. Steven was very good with languages; he could speak Swahili, Sukuma, and English fluently.

Steven Kanumba's Acting Career

Steven Kanumba started acting when he was young, in the 1990s. He performed in plays at his church. In 2002, he joined a theater group called Kaole Arts Group.

He became well-known for his roles in TV shows like Jahazi and Dira. His first movie was Haviliki. In 2006, he met Nazz, who helped him connect with more people in the film industry. Steven also starred in Dar 2 Lagos (Part 1) and Part 2, a movie that featured actors and crew from both Tanzania and Nigeria. Other popular films he appeared in include She is My Sister, This Is It, and Love Gamble. In 2009, he was a special guest on the TV show Big Brother Africa 4.

In 2011, Steven Kanumba was chosen to be an ambassador for Oxfam GROW. This meant he helped raise awareness about important issues like food security and poverty. Just before he passed away, he was getting ready for his first movie role in Hollywood, which is the American film industry.

Steven Kanumba's Passing

Steven Kanumba passed away on April 7, 2012, after he fell in his bedroom. He was taken to Muhimbili National Referral Hospital, where he was declared dead.

His funeral was a very large event. Around 30,000 people came to pay their respects. Important leaders from Tanzania also attended, including the first lady, Salma Kikwete, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Gharib Bilal, and the minister for culture and sport, Emmanuel Nchimbi. Steven Kanumba was buried in Kinondoni Cemetery.

  • In 2008, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Vinara Movie Awards.
  • In 2010, his movie This Is It won Best Movie at the Mini-Ziff Awards. He also won Best Actor and Best Producer at the Filamu Central Website Awards.
  • He won Best Actor at the SFC Awards in 2010.
  • At the Zanzibar International Film Festival in 2011, his movie Devil Kingdom won Best Actor and Best Movie in Sound.
  • In 2012, he was named Best Actor at the Baab Kubwa Magazine Awards.
  • After his passing, he continued to be honored. In 2013, his movie Ndoa Yangu won Best Selling Movie and Kijiji Cha Tambua Haki won Best Movie of the Year at the Steps Entertainments Awards. He also received a Posthumous Award.
  • In 2014, Ndoa Yangu was voted Favourite Movie at the Tanzania People's Choice Awards.
  • In 2015, he received a Tribute Personality Award at the Tanzania Film Awards and was named Best Actor at the Proin Promotions Awards.
